Chime in on Chapters

Do you guys have a general preference for chapter headings? Do you like titles or prefer the bare bones numbering?

I remember the Dragon Lance books being horrible with their chapter names because they just told you what was about to happen. "Chapter 11: Raistlin's Betrays The Party"

In tenth grade I was all about the roman numeral's for chapters, but I think I'm over that now. It doesn't annoy me or anything, I've just come to really hate any and all things roman.

  1. I like semi-witty chapter titles for anything that has even an iota of humor. For more serious stuff, anything that is weirdly descriptive is nice. like, "the everchanging constant" or "dripping emerald" or "creation down!" stuff like that!

  2. I like titles and numbers. Have to agree with you on the dragonlance chapter headings . . those were bad. I guess it depends on the story and how it's constructed. For a fast paced thriller, numbers work well. For other formats, a title that's obscure enough not to give much away, but has relevance after reading is cool.

  3. They're good for reference too. George RR Martin divides his books into characters, so there aren't chapters per se, you finish "Sansha" and then start "Tyrion." Which is ok, except when you're trying to figure out where your buddy is in the book.

  4. The reason I ask is because I have been playing with Lucky One's format. I got rid of the serial format and just stated numbering them as the story switched characters. The 5 installments everyone read ends up being like 20-25 breaks...but that's a lot of titling.

I'm still not solid on how I'll break it all down.
