Hey all, I was wondering what process(es) work best for you for story idea generation and development. What I mean by that is, when (and how) do you get ideas for stories, and then how do you go about developing them. I find myself coming up with great ideas for opening scenes all the time, but then have no idea where to go from there. And when I sit and try to force something out . . well, bad things happen and I have to wash my pants.
So, if you don't mind sharing, what has worked for you in the past? Do story ideas come to you out of the blue? Or can you methodically generate them at will? Or is it a hybrid?
Lucky One spiraled from a bad day with Taven when I thought, "My god I've birthed the anti christ." Which got me thinking what it would be like to be the parent of what could be considered a monster.
ReplyDeleteBut, once I started working it into a story I figured out the ending pretty quickly.
Also; if I can't figure something out I don't try to force it. I kind of let the solution come to me, and it usually does. That's what caused a delay in my actual story writing. I had to figure out some of the specifics and mechanics of Teddy's powers.
ReplyDeleteMy first draft I never intend to be good. No one shits gold, and in my opinion if you're going to be a writer you're going to have to accept revising and editing your work. My first drafts I call authors copy, meaning I don't stress over getting every detail right the first time.
The five installments I posted here for you guys had been written and edited for readability and such, but since those installments, I've been plowing forward (50 pages single spaced so far) knowing I'll be polishing it all up.
