She watched her life drift away. She had earned this punishment, she knew. She had submitted to their banishment and willingly taken the journey. She had steeled herself for this moment, but as the craft roared and slowly rose back into the air, he stared down, and so she had to stare back. It would climb in small spirals up and over the clouds. It was the only way past the Storm—and still it would be dangerous. No guarantee he’d even make it back himself. As they stared, her keen eyes saw him shifting, doing something and suddenly his vessel’s slow decent stopped. He hovered there for a moment, staring, accusing. She stared right back, unmoved by his defiance. It didn’t matter though. She had chosen to accept their ruling. He couldn’t understand why and she didn’t have the words to make him. This is how it had to be. She gathered her will and began whispering words up to the sky in a steady hum that began to echo and stir the winds back into turbulence. He kept staring as the wind caught his vessel and shoved him up and away. She waited until he was just about to go beyond any clear details, and she smiled a smile she knew he could read from any distance. I’m not done.
