My first challenge for you is a write a day challenge. A paragraph, a page, a chapter--some is better than none, and I think the daily routine will do us all good.
The soul of this project is to get you writers I know writing and to create a fun place to see it published. Serials are fun and tend to promote themselves, plus I really think if it's fun to write it will be fun to read.
An no, what you write doesn't have to be about your serial.
